Learning targets
  • I can arrange an 8-bar beat using loop, repeat, and copy, with a change in bar 8.
  • I can organize my project with clear track names and colors.
  • I can check my beat against the unit requirements.

Review: what do you have so far?

Scroll through your project. Solo each region you made in Lessons 5–7. Pick the one groove that best fits the genre you chose. That groove is the start of your final beat.

Filling 8 bars

Loop
Making a region repeat over and over to the right until it hits another region or the end of the song.
Variation
A small change to a repeating pattern, such as a missing kick, extra hi-hats, or a fill, to keep the listener interested.

A good 8-bar beat repeats enough to feel steady and changes enough to stay interesting. A common plan:

BarsWhat happens
1–3Main groove
4Small variation (for example, drop the kick on beat 4 or add hi-hat 16ths)
5–7Main groove
8Fill that leads back to bar 1
To…Do this
Loop a regionSelect it and press L, or drag its top-right corner to the right.
Repeat a region a set number of timesSelect it and press ⌘R.
Copy a regionHold Option and drag it.
Rename a trackDouble-click the track name.
Color a track or regionSelect it and press OptionC to open the color palette.
Watch out

If you change one copy of a pattern, only that copy changes. Make your variation after you copy, on the bar you want to be different.

Work session: build it

Arrange and organize
  1. Move your chosen groove to bar 1 (drag it). Delete or mute regions you're not using. (To mute a region, select it and press ControlM.)
  2. Copy or repeat the groove to fill bars 1–8.
  3. Make the bar 4 variation and the bar 8 fill.
  4. If you're layering a Drummer track, trim it so it plays only where you want it.
  5. Rename every track (for example: Kick/Snare, Hats, Drummer) and give each a color.
  6. Set the tempo to fit your genre.
  7. Set Cycle over bars 1–9 and listen all the way through at least three times.
  8. Save with ⌘S.
