Finish 10 minBounce 10 minListening circle 22 minReflect 15 min
Learning targets
- I can bounce my project to an audio file in the right format.
- I can give specific feedback using vocabulary from this unit.
- I can evaluate my own beat and set a goal for Unit 2.
Finish up
Use the first 10 minutes to check off anything left on the final product requirements.
Bounce your beat
- Bounce
- Exporting your project (or part of it) as a single audio file that plays anywhere, without Logic.
- WAV
- A full-quality audio file format. It's large, and it's what producers send to each other.
- MP3
- A compressed audio file format. It's much smaller, a little lower in quality, and easy to share and stream.
Bounce to a file
- Set Cycle over bars 1–9. The extra bar lets the last sounds finish ringing.
- Choose (⌘B).
- Under Destination, check PCM (this makes a WAV) and also check MP3.
- Make sure the start and end match your cycle (bar 1 to bar 9).
- Click OK, name the file
LastName_Unit1_Beat, and save it in the class folder. - Find the files and play the MP3 outside of Logic to check it.
Listening circle
In small groups, play each beat twice. After each one, every listener gives one comment in each format:
| Frame | Example |
|---|---|
| I noticed… (something specific that worked) | “I noticed the open hat on the offbeats made it sound like house.” |
| I wonder… (a suggestion) | “I wonder if a fill in bar 8 would lead back to the top better.” |
Use at least one term from this unit in every comment: backbeat, velocity, accent, swing, fill, quantize, four-on-the-floor, half-time… The Glossary has them all.
Reflect (Criterion D: Evaluating)
Answer these in full sentences on your reflection sheet or class assignment:
- What genre is your beat? Name two choices you made that signal that genre.
- Which Logic tool (Step Sequencer, Piano Roll, Drummer, quantize, or velocity) did the most to shape your beat? How?
- What was the most useful comment you got in the listening circle? Would you change anything because of it?
- How is working in Logic like working on the soundboard? Give one example.
- Set one goal for Unit 2, where you'll add chords and bass on top of this beat.
